What To Do When Your Eyeglasses Can't Keep Up With Your Aging Eyes

The aging process can change the health, function, and appearance of your eyes over time. If your eyeglasses can't keep up with the changes in your vision, you may struggle to see and get through life. But with the proper care and lifestyle changes, you can preserve your aging eyes. Keep your vision intact with the tips below.

Keep Your Eyes Well Nourished

Like your heart, lungs, and other major organs, your eyes depend on the right nutrients to function well. Nutrients, such as essential fatty acids and vitamin E, reduce your risk factors for macular degeneration and several other age-related eye diseases. Some nutrients may even improve your ability to see objects, read the fine print, and process colors.

You can take steps to improve your vision by eating plenty of fresh produce, fish, and fruit. If possible, fill half of your lunch and dinner plates with red, orange, yellow, and dark green vegetables. These colorful foods contain several of the vitamins and minerals needed for good eye health, including vitamin C and folate

If your vision doesn't improve after eating the foods above, have your eyes checked.

Seek Eye Treatment

Sometimes, people develop multiple problems with their eyes that interfere with their ability to wear eyeglasses. For example, you could have astigmatism, presbyopia, and retinal problems at the same time. Some of these eye problems can cause a loss of vision in one or both eyes. In this case, you may need more in-depth treatment such as eye surgery to prevent the total loss of your vision.

Eye surgeries, such as laser surgery and conductive keratoplasty, can help correct or improve multiple eye conditions. An optometrist, or eye doctor, can inspect or examine your eyes to see what type of surgery works best for them. In many cases, one surgery is all you need to improve your vision. But if you do require additional treatment, an optometrist will let you know ahead of time.

After you receive the treatment you need to improve your failing eyesight, continue to eat the healthy foods mentioned above. Your aging eyes can still experience problems without the proper diet and care. If you experience eye problems after surgery, an eye doctor will reassess your vision and make other recommendations to improve it.

If your eyeglasses no longer work for you, contact an eye surgeon or doctor for an exam. You don't have to let the aging process keep you from seeing the world around you.
